There are several components when it comes to an accurate and thorough dental exam. Something many people don’t understand about dentistry is that by the time a person experiences pain, the problem has probably progressed significantly. By scheduling routine, preventative dental exams and check-ups, our dental team at West Maitland Dentistry are able to spot small issues before they develop into more serious problems.
Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are quickly taking the place of traditional film-based dental x-rays and have become one of the most important advances in dental technology. These types of x-rays can spot things that traditional x-rays cannot, which can help to prevent and address dental issues such as cavities, gum disease and infections. Unlike traditional dental x-rays, a small sensor is placed inside your mouth instead of the old, awkward and uncomfortable paper tabs. The digital x-rays also reduces the radiation exposure by 80%.
At your first appointment Dr. Dhaliwal will perform an oral cancer screening. During the exam she will look for any signs of oral cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums.
The TMJ is a hinge that connects your jaw to the bones of your skull. Problems can occur as a result from muscular issues, a misaligned bite, or even more serious problems with the physical joint. Dr. Dhaliwal will perform the evaluation by feeling muscle movement when opening and closing the mouth and listening for popping, clicking, or grinding sounds.
This part of the exam will determine if there are signs of periodontal disease by looking for inflammation, recession, and bone loss.
Please note, at the same time as your dental exam will be your routine teeth cleaning. Our doors are always open to new patients. Call to schedule your checkup and join our dental family today!
